My Disconnected Birthday

Each year when my birthday rolls around, I excitedly try to decide what I want to do, I reflect on my previous age and write goals for what I want to accomplish in this new year. When the actual day comes, I celebrate, and I spend a lot of the day checking social media, reading all the sweet posts from friends and family, and I feel super loved…for that day. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s completely nothing wrong with birthday posts/checking social media etc. but for ME, because this year has been so full of growth in self-love, I wanted to make sure that this birthday, I disconnected from the world, and spent time with God in gratitude, and made sure I was showing myself all the love and not felt that I needed any validation from any external things. When I tried to explain it to people, I felt they thought I was a bit weird; but let me tell you, it was the best birthday I’ve had!

Where I Stayed

When you think of disconnecting and escaping the world, what do you think of? For me, it was isolation, mountains, nature, sunsets; and I found all of that plus more on Airbnb in this beautiful Eco-Lodge B&B named Casa Tarsan. (Sign up on Airbnb here to receive $45CAD off your first booking!) It is located about 20 minutes outside of Gandia, Spain, on top of the mountains. It is owned by this lovely couple Eric & Nikita, from Amsterdam, who were beyond accommodating.

As soon as I arrived, I felt an immediate sense of calmness. There’s just something about being surrounded by nature, hearing the birds, seeing the beauty around you, that gives you this feeling of peace.

What I Did

Absolutely nothing. No, I’m kidding – well kind of. Eric & Nikita offer a few hiking trails along the mountains, that I would have loved to do, but with the sun at 31°C, and no clouds, I decided to save that for next time. I was only there 2 nights, and I spent my time in the pool, journaling, praying, listening to podcasts and reading. Eric is a former DJ, so they have a really nice set up with turntables to play some music, and there’s also an option to watch a movie under the stars. Nikita is a yoga instructor, so there’s a perfect spot on the property where she leads a yoga class in the mornings. Of course, my favorite part was watching the beautiful sunset! There’s a jacuzzi overlooking the mountain with the perfect sunset view, and one night I just ate dinner while watching it set.

What To Eat

Did I not mention that Casa Tarsan is VEGAN! Yes, that’s right. For an extra cost, you can receive a tasty vegan breakfast, as well as dinner. I mean, I’m not vegan, but I always admire people who are. I ate the food, because I’m always open to trying new things, and it was SO delicious! For breakfast, Eric cooked a chickpea omelet, which I ate with an incredible view, and for dinner, he made a fantastic vegan burrito. Aside from the normal coffee and tea, they also have some pretty yummy pure fruit juices!

A Year Older

I know people sometimes really dislike when their birthday comes around, as it reminds them that they are getting older; but I love it, as I love to look back and see how far I’ve come, to see all that I have accomplished, and to look forward to all that is in store! Disconnecting on my birthday was one of the best things I did to start off a new year for me, and being able to escape to a place like Casa Tarsan was just the cherry on top. I would recommend anybody that is visiting Spain, to take a few days and stay at this beautiful Eco-Lodge. I promise you won’t regret it. Sometimes we get so busy with life, that we forget to stop and literally just smell the roses!
